Transition from short to long hair?

Hi.

I'm an African- American female currently sporting the "Halle Berry cut" (shaved in the back and long on top). I have started growing my hair back out but the transition is rough. My new growth is very course and I don't want to relax it since I'm trying to go natural. Once the back grows out more I will cut of the relaxed part on top. How can I wear my hair while I wait for it to grow without looking crazy or damaging it?

I also had the Halle Berry cut %26amp; have since grown my hair out. But I have a perm also. Are you opposed to putting in a texturizer? This is what I did for the transition stage. I used a lot of conditioner %26amp; gel. (I kind of wore my hair like the girl on the Short Looks box) until it grew out to a more manageable length. Keeping it looking more like a natural curl than a kinky natural. Which is what I was going for. What's neat about it (to me) is that I can still do this even today just moisten my hair and have a wet wavey look. Hope this helps out some if not...I'm sorry...hair does work differently %26amp; it depends on what you are trying to achieve.
